I've had this TV for two years and have not had one issue. If you are making a purchase of this type of TV then you should have a surround sound system to match, receiver, sub-woofer, speakers, etc. The speakers are horrible on this set but that is the only issue. The setup is easy, the picture quality is on point, the blacks are great, no problem with bowing, have not had to replace any bulb yet (knock on wood). This was my first flat screen HD TV and couldn't be happier, got a great price, not heavy to move, the shipping was free through Amazon at the time.My PS3 games look fabulous as well as the Blue-Ray Movies.I highly recommend this TV if you are looking at DLP, perfect fit for a decent size living room/area.
the unit would make unnervingly loud pops and bangs as it would cool down and warm up, some so loud it would startle you. When i spoke to samsung about the issue they said after 12 months there is no warranty on any part what so ever. my parents also own the same set by the way with the same problems. Ok,so i have owned this TV for about 18 months, at first it was great. after this indecent and my problems with my cell phones i will never purchase a samsung product again. It should be covered under warranty.
to my amazement when the tech came out he said the problem is a major component.
I was told by samsung these noises are normal and have no bearing on the units function.
this is very sad, i know have to buy a 1000.00 part for a 1300 tv or buy a new tv.
but then the fun started.
microwaves and such have extended warranties on there major components but a 1300.00 tv doesn't.
Long story short, these pops and bangs were essentially the light tunnels and light engine banging around as the cycled through their operational temperatures.
Last night the tv all of a sudden had two large black bars run across the upper third of the screen.
i have been a long time samsung customer, also owning there mobile phones.
there customer service is very unhelpful.
I bought this TV year and half ago for $1200 shipped. It's not even half as bright/clear from this angle. - Super light - Not that you'll be carrying around TV of this size :-)Cons : - Horrible sound from the in built speakers.
I'm mostly satisfied with this TV. it's hardly noticeable unless there are horizontal lines on the screen - Terrible Off-axis viewing performance. At that time this was a considerable bargain to get a 50 inch high def TV at this price point.
- Bowing problem. Here's what I think of it:Pros : - Big screen - True 1080p (1900x1080) resolution - Cheaper than 50inch LCDs and plasmas - Awesome connectivity (3 HDMI inputs, 1 PC, 2 composites etc) - USB port (For firmware upgrades or watching ur pics/or listening to your music). Honestly i've used this once in so long - Very good contrast ration (again considering the price point) - Slim profile.
I don't care about viewing from side but i've put the TV on a 3 foot high table and i watch tv sitting on floor always. - Limited life of the light bulb (haven't faced this yet)Overall, I would say this is a pretty good TV for the money.
I have owned an HL-S6187W (different model / not slim) for well over a year, love it, and never had a problem with it). I purchased this TV for my mother about a year ago. (The same 2-3 hundred dollar bulb thats supposed to last 3-4 years) 1st bulb blew after having the tv for about 5 months. I'm sure that this was a manufacturing defect of some sort and we just happened to get one of the unlucky TVs. Hopefully the next TV will be OK. 2nd bulb 4 months after the original bulb was replaced.
If you purchase this TV I strongly recommend getting an extended warranty. It has blown 3 bulbs in that time. The tech company that came out to fix my moms said this was a known problem with this model. 3rd bulb 2 months after the second bulb replaced. The TV is never left on or used for more than a couple hours. After many calls to that company & with samsung they are going to replace it with a HL-50A650.
If we have any problems with it I will never buy another Samsung again.
The screen was bowed or pincussioned. Even though it's refurbished all i had to do was fax in my receipt and tomorrow I will be calling to set up an appointment for a technician to come directly to my house to fix this problem. I can actually read the words on my games now :)The second day I realized that I had the problem that a lot of people had. I bought this samsung DLP tv refurbished from secondact.com for 799 plus shipping. This isn't a huge deal to me because for the price i payed i wasn't looking for great audio without getting outside speakers anyways. I called and got through to an easy to understand American representative very quickly and explained my problem.
The tv has a 90 day warranty from samsung so I began by calling their customer support.
not sure which one.
If that gets fixed perfectly the only thing wrong with this tv is the audio.
First impressions were that the picture through my xbox was beautiful (switched from crappy old 36 in sdtv).
I will update this after the tech comes to see what happens but the customer support from samsung was amazing and I love that i don't have to ship out my tv somewhere and not get it back for a month as other manufacturers might.
If there's a perfect horizontal line on the screen, when it gets to either the left or right edge it goes up, creating a kind of smile shaped effect.
I was immediately beside myself as I had just spent quite a bit of money on this tv.
If turned up to normal to high-normal listening range it has a definite buzz, which the technician may also fix when he gets here.
If on a budget this is a great tv to get as i see it.GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE
